Encouraging certified sustainable palm oil

Efeca reiterates its strong support for certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) amidst recent discussions sparked by Iceland’s decision to remove palm oil from its own-brand products. In response to concerns, RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) has outlined in their response that banning palm oil could potentially lead to increased deforestation and consumer confusion regarding sustainability. Instead, Efeca advocates for collaborative efforts across the supply chain to promote and adopt sustainable standards, thereby enhancing the overall sustainability of the palm oil market.

In 2017, 75% of total palm oil imports to the UK was certified sustainable

As of 2017, 75% of palm oil imports to the UK were certified sustainable, reflecting significant progress. Efeca, through its participation in the UK Roundtable on Sourcing Sustainable Palm Oil, continues to support businesses and government in achieving the goal of sourcing 100% CSPO by 2020. Over the past decade, the UK has significantly increased its procurement of CSPO, with figures from FEDIOL indicating a substantial volume sourced through Identity Preserved, Segregated, and Mass Balance certification schemes. Through ongoing engagement with the UK Roundtable, businesses are encouraged to consider the global impact of their procurement decisions and recognise their potential to influence best practices worldwide. By collaborating with local stakeholders and supporting initiatives on the ground, Efeca believes in fostering resilient and sustainable global supply chains.
