On 29th March 2022, Efeca chaired a meeting between the Indonesian Ambassador to the UK and representatives from UK industry, Indonesian trade associations, and Indonesian Ministries. The purpose was to discuss FLEGT-licensed Indonesian timber products in the UK and explore avenues to improve their market access.
The meeting provided a valuable opportunity to delve into how the UK can enhance its acceptance of legally sourced Indonesian timber products. Participants reviewed the implementation and benefits of the Indonesia-UK Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) to date. Discussions also revolved around strategies for more effective marketing of Indonesian products in the UK market.
Key topics included ensuring compliance with legal timber sourcing regulations, the impact of FLEGT licensing on market confidence, and ways to streamline trade procedures. Participants exchanged views on consumer preferences, sustainability standards, and the role of certifications in boosting market competitiveness.
The outcomes underscored collaborative efforts to promote sustainable trade practices and strengthen bilateral relations between Indonesia and the UK. Improving market access for FLEGT-licensed timber products is crucial for supporting sustainable forest management and economic development in Indonesia, while responsibly meeting UK market demand.
