UK Sustainable Soya Initiative
Efeca developed and supports the UK Soya Initiative, including facilitating the establishment and implementation of the UK Roundtable on Sustainable Soya and providing support to its members. Working with members to develop the goal and scope of the soya initiative, Efeca provides technical assistance to support member decision-making. Members include the major UK traders (ADM, Cefetra, Cargill), feed industry, meat and dairy producers, food service (such as McDonalds and Compass) and all major UK retailers. For a current list of members please see here. To see some of the reports and briefing notes we have written for the Sustainable Soya Initiative, please go to our Resources page.
With the support of the UK Roundtable on Sustainable Soya, eight of the largest UK supermarkets -Tesco, Asda, Lidl UK, Co-op, Waitrose, Marks and Spencer, Aldi UK and Sainsbury’s – have taken a major step forward in greening their supply chains, publishing their action plans to deliver sustainable soya to the UK market. These retailers represent a combined retail market share of 83% and over 1.2 million imported tonnes of soya, equivalent to 400,000 hectares, roughly 2.5 times the size of London. These, and other members’ commitments, have supported a major step forward for the UK.
Aiming to generate market change, Efeca is working with other national initiatives across Europe and further afield including China. Efeca also supports the UK government in discussions with the Brazilian Embassy to ensure that activities support producers of soya.
