Since joining the United Nations’ Race to Zero campaign in July 2021, Efeca has been tracking and reporting on our GHG emissions, as well as our purchase of carbon offsets. Below we share an update on our progress across 2026.
Race To Zero is a global campaign to rally leadership and support from non-state actors – including companies, cities, regions, financial, educational, and healthcare institutions – for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth. It mobilises a coalition of leading net zero initiatives; as of September 2026, the campaign included more than 17,000 members across 150 countries, representing 40% of global financial assets, 60% of the FTSE 100, and over 12% of the world’s population. These ‘real economy’ actors joined 146 countries starting in 2021 in the largest ever alliance committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest.
As a small business, Efeca joined the Race to Zero through the UK’s SME Climate Hub, along with many other small and medium sized UK businesses. Efeca pledged to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2040. The first step in this journey was to measure our baseline emissions for the year 2019/2020. We then measured and reported our emissions for 2021/2022 so that we would have a comparison for a more normal (non-Covid) year.
The following report contains the calculations of our GHG emissions for our baseline year 2019/2020, as well as 2021/2022, 2022/2023, 2023/2024, 2024/2025, and 2025/26.
It includes information on our company, background on our choice of baseline year, information on our scope of reporting and methodologies, and information on our GHG emission totals. It also compares our progress over the years and shows how we are performing against the more specific targets we set in 2022.
Our overall carbon footprint of 13.73 tonnes is lower than our baseline year of 17.39 tonnes and has reduced by 21% since our baseline year. This is also reflected in this year’s higher rate of business travel compared to last year We are very proud that despite doubling our team size, our tonnes per FTE has reduced significantly from 1.95 in 2019 to 0.76 tonnes per capita in 2025-26, or by 61%.
We agreed to achieve carbon neutralisation of our total emissions for 2019/20, 2021/22, and 2022/23, as well as 2023/24, which we have achieved through the purchase of carbon offsets in 2023 and in 2024 from a Plan Vivo project called CommuniTree in Nicaragua. In 2025 we supported a Plan Vivo project called Mikoko Pamoja (we chose Plan Vivo as our Founding Director, Emily Fripp, is a Trustee). This year, the team voted to support the EthioTrees project in northern Ethiopia, purchasing 14 tonnes to cover our 13.73 tonne footprint.
EthioTrees is an ecosystem restoration initiative in the Northern Ethiopian Highlands. The project focuses on natural forest regeneration and promotes the production of frankincense and honey, providing economic opportunities for local communities while addressing soil degradation and enhancing biodiversity. Working in collaboration with Mekelle University and Ghent University, EthioTrees combines scientific research with local knowledge to implement strategies that boost biodiversity, increase carbon sequestration, promote groundwater recharge, and generate cash income for landless farmers in one of Ethiopia’s most ecologically vulnerable regions.
